In Secret Cove, we are looking, as if through a window, into a mysterious, womb-like cavern, its dark walls a series of overlapping organic shapes that open into a faraway central ‘eye’ of blue: a color that usually signals water or sky, or perhaps both. The longing for safety and comfort is universal- but the subject is also very personal to Florian- a self-proclaimed “outsider” who struggles with loneliness but also thrives in his solitary pursuit of making art.

Using a rich variety of textures and materials, Roeper creates an imaginary world of landscapes and imagery which invite the viewer into a state of quiet contemplation. The luxurious textures and the soft, abstract shapes evoke a sense of shelter and belonging- places where we can hide from the external world, or even get lost in. Roeper has been building bespoke furniture for clients such as Dior and Louis Vuitton for over two decades- his expertise in the handmade is is evident in the masterfully-crafted layers and exquisite finishes, which illustrate his approach to art not as a flat surface, but as a sculptural, immersive presence.
