Medusa

$12,000.00

MEDUSA examines how our lives are split into a surface-level existence [survival mode, make money, get food], and a deeper being and knowing which connects us to the life force of the universe in ways that we struggle to understand. And therein lies the problem- we try to understand it with our thinking minds. It is not something we can think- it is something we must feel and trust. So much of our lives plays out in survival mode: hectic, stressful, perpetually unfulfilled and hunting for more- this is depicted as the city within a bubble, representing the hustle and bustle of daily life. But when we ground ourselves in the present moment and allow stillness to enter our minds, we can sink deep into a state of calm and peace- this process is depicted as the roots or tentacles which represent the subconscious, the mysterious connectedness to the universe.

Mixed media artwork on sculpted wood panel. Materials: Resin, silver leaf, lacquer, wood. Framed in American Elm. Limited Edition of 25. Each piece is handmade and unique, with varying wood grain patterns. Hangs on wood cleat [included].

Using resin and metal leaf as his primary materials, Roeper creates imaginary worlds of landscapes and imagery which invite the viewer into a state of quiet contemplation and wonder. The luxurious textures and the soft, abstract shapes evoke a sense of shelter and belonging- places where we can hide from the external world, or even get lost in. Roeper has been building bespoke furniture for clients such as Dior and Louis Vuitton for over two decades- his expertise in the handmade is evident in the masterfully-crafted layers and exquisite finishes, which illustrate his approach to art not as a flat surface, but as a sculptural, immersive presence.
