For most of us, graffiti is just a scribble on the wall which offers no context or meaning. So I wanted to create a piece in which a series of random graffitis on a freight train -when combined and read as one phrase- come together as a meaningful expression. The beauty of this hidden metaphor is that it challenges the viewer to step into this other world with their full attention, and solve the riddle. All of a sudden they are hyper-focused on the graffiti, which normally just blurs into the background of the urban landscape. The viewer is now transported into a sensation of curiosity and wonder. It is fully up to them to solve the puzzle - on the surface level the hidden message is about the exact moment in which the passing box car perfectly frames the cactus through its open doors. On a deeper level, it invites the viewer to focus their senses and reconnect with the present moment.

Mixed media artwork on sculpted wood panel. Materials: Resin, silver leaf, lacquer, wood. Framed in American Elm. Limited Edition of 25. Each piece is handmade and unique, with varying wood grain patterns. Hangs on wood cleat [included].

Using resin and metal leaf as his primary materials, Roeper creates imaginary worlds of landscapes and imagery which invite the viewer into a state of quiet contemplation and wonder. The luxurious textures and the soft, abstract shapes evoke a sense of shelter and belonging- places where we can hide from the external world, or even get lost in. Roeper has been building bespoke furniture for clients such as Dior and Louis Vuitton for over two decades- his expertise in the handmade is evident in the masterfully-crafted layers and exquisite finishes, which illustrate his approach to art not as a flat surface, but as a sculptural, immersive presence.
